Corey Wayne Brewer was born March 5, 1986 in Portland, Tennessee. He is the son of Pee Wee and Glenda Brewer. Corey grew up in a small town 30 minutes north of Nashville that is located near the Tennessee, Kentucky state line. As a youth growing up in Portland, Brewer spent many of his summers helping his father on a garbage route and in the tobacco fields. Brewer was a multi-sport athlete at Portland High School. Corey led the Panthers to the semi-finals in the Tennessee High School State Basketball tournament his junior year. As a senior in 2004 he was named the Class AA “Mr. Basketball” from the TSSAA. He was also named to the prestigious McDonald’s All-American Team and played in the Jordan Brand All American game as one of the elite high school basketball players in the country. Corey averaged 29.4 points and 12.8 rebounds a game his senior season of high school. After high school Corey took his game to the University of Florida where he led the Gators to back-to-back National Championships. He was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2007 Final Four. Earned First Team All-SEC honors as a junior and Second Team honors as a sophomore. Named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. Finished collegiate career tied for 28th on Florida’s all-time leading scoring list with 1,225 points. Also ranks fifth in career steals with 176. Ranks as Florida’s all-time scoring leader in the NCAA Tournament with 198 career points. Junior (2006-07): Ranked second on the team in scoring (13.2 ppg) and assists (2.9 apg) and third in rebounding (4.7 rpg). Paced the team and ranked fourth in the SEC in steals (1.9 spg). Missed three games due to mononucleosis. Tallied a season-high 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals vs. Western Kentucky. Posted a double-double of 19 points and ten rebounds vs. Georgia. Registered 18 points, five rebounds, three steals and three assists vs. Ohio State. Pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds vs. South Carolina. Matched season high with 22 points vs. Ole Miss in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. Led team with 21 points vs. Jackson State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Scored 19 points vs. UCLA in the Final Four. Tallied 13 points and eight rebounds vs. Ohio State in the national championship game. Sophomore (2005-06): Averaged 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Scored 20 or more points four times. Recorded a career-high 26 points vs. Vanderbilt. Registered the first triple-double in school history with 15 points, a season-high 10 rebounds and a career-high 13 assists vs. Jacksonville. Tallied 20 points and eight rebounds at Tennessee. Sank five threes in scoring 23 points vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tallied 19 points vs. George Mason in the Final Four. Scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds vs. UCLA in the National Championship game. Named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team. Freshman (2004-05): Averaged 7.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and a team-high 1.4 steals. Scored in double figures eight times. Posted season-high 17 points vs. Mississippi State in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in scoring 14 points at Auburn. Grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds at Tennessee. Scored 11 points vs. Villanova in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors. Professional Career: Brewer was selected seventh overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2007 National Basketball Association draft. Rookie season: Corey played 79 games in his first season in the NBA and cracked the starting line-up 35 times. Scored a career-high 16 points twice against the Houston Rockets on January 11, 2008 and March 30, 2008 against the Utah Jazz. On December 6, 2007 against the Atlanta Hawks he recorded a season-high 18 rebounds and 44 minutes played. |
