The 82 game National Basketball Association schedule can be tough on a first year player. Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Corey Brewer uses the game of golf to help unwind in the off-season.
After being a multi-sport star in high school, Corey decided to take up a new sport.
Brewer received golf lessons after graduating from Portland High School
in Tennessee, since that time Corey has spent a lot of time working on
his golf game.
"It's a very relaxing game and I love to play," Brewer said. "It's a lot of fun."
The game of golf is mentally and physically challenging. The frustrations of the game can be seen in the average golfer or on national tv everyweek.
"The guys on tv make it look so easy, but it's really
not," Brewer said. "When you first learn to hit the ball it becomes
very exciting and it takes a lot of practice."
Since declaring for the NBA draft in the spring of 2007 the game of
golf has been put on hold except for the occasional charity.
Once
the off-season began Brewer went back to the weight room to get
stronger and to add more weight to his frame. Working daily with a
trainer and spending time focusing on shooting has been a big part of
the summer workout program.
Corey came back to Tennessee for a few days to play in the Portland Chamber of Commerce golf tournament in May.
Events in Florida and Minnesota were also apart of Brewer's long summer.
"One of the great things about my job is being able to give back to the community," Brewer said.
Corey says one of the things that he needs to work on in his short game.
"I need to work on my chipping," Brewer said. "If I could get that down, I would be more of a complete player"
